Lyrics of Powerslave

Into the Abyss I’ll fall-the eye of Horus
Into the eyes of the night-watching me go
Green is the cat’s eye that glows-
in this Temple
Enter the risen Osiris-risen again.

Tell me why I had to be a Powerslave
I don’t wanna die, I’m a God,
why can’t I live on?
When the Life Giver dies,
all around is laid waste.
And in my last hour,
I’m a slave to the Power of Death.

When I was living this lie-Fear was my game
People would worship and fall-
drop to their knees.
So bring me the blood and red wine
for the one to succeed me,
for he is a man and a God-
and He will die too.

Now I am cold but a ghost lives in my veins,
Silent the terror that reigned-
marbled in stone.
A shell of a man God preserved-
a thousand ages,
But open the gates of my Hell-
I will strike from my grave.

Tell me why I had to be a Powerslave
I don’t wanna die, I’m a God,
why can’t I live on?
When the Life Giver dies,
all around is laid waste,
And in my last hour,
I’m a slave to the Power of Death.
Slave to the Power of Death...
Slave to the Power of Death...

'Powerslave' is the title track of the fifth album by heavy metal band Iron Maiden, written by lead vocalist Bruce Dickinson.

According to Dickinson, 'Powerslave' is 'about a dying Pharaoh. He's about to die and he finds himself a slave to the power of death, as well as the slave to his own power. When a Pharaoh dies, all the slaves that built his grave and prepared his funeral have to die too. Even if he didn't want it, his power implies without questions that these people must die, far beyond his own will. Basically, he's a prisoner of his power.' Though originally cut out from most pressings of the original album, live performances feature the original soundbite followed a drum intro by Nicko Mcbrain before the rest of the band enters.

On live performances of this song, Dickinson wears a theatrical mask. The first guitar solo is played by Dave Murray, the second one by Adrian Smith and the third by Murray. On the Somewhere Back in Time World Tour (2008–2009), keyboard sections by Michael Kenney were added to the performance of the song.
